Widgets are blank, or not displaying correctly

Applies to: iOS, iPadOSUpdated August 2026

Applies to: Timepage, Actions, and Flow widgets on iPhone and iPad.

A widget shows a cached snapshot of data from its app rather than talking to your data live, so when it goes blank or looks wrong it’s usually because that snapshot is stale — the app hasn’t run recently, needs an update, or the widget is pointed at data that isn’t there. Working through the steps below clears up almost every case.

Quick fixes

Try these in order — the first couple resolve most problems:

  1. Remove and re-add the widget. Touch and hold the widget, tap Remove Widget, then add it again (see Adding and Editing Widgets).
  2. Open the app once. Widgets refresh from the app, so opening it lets the widget pick up current data.
  3. Update the app. Make sure you’re on the latest version from the App Store.
  4. Force quit the app, then reopen it.
  5. Restart your device.

If a data widget is blank

Widgets that show your own data — your schedule, upcoming events, or next action — can look blank when there’s simply nothing to show, or when they’re configured for the wrong source. Check that:

  • you’re signed in to the right account, and
  • the widget is pointed at a calendar or list that actually has items in it (a widget set to a hidden calendar or an empty list will appear blank).

You can change a widget’s source by editing it — see Adding and Editing Widgets.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my widget blank?

A widget shows a cached snapshot from the app, so it can go blank when the app hasn't run recently, needs updating, or is pointed at an empty list or hidden calendar. Opening the app usually refreshes it.
